With over 30 years in corporate leadership and identity management, David has played a key role in changing how digital identities are verified and secured.

In this interview, David shares his experiences, including the challenges of creating a secure identity system and how new technologies like AI help prevent fraud. He also talks about ID Dataweb’s vision for the future, the importance of trust in innovation, and how the company is shaping the future of identity security.

Let’s dive in and explore the dynamic environment of identity management!

Hello David! Greetings for the day!

1. What specific gaps in the data industry did you observe that motivated you to start this company? Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey?

Ans. ID Dataweb was founded to address the lack of a secure, interoperable, and privacy-enhancing identity ecosystem. At the time, there were no consistent data standards or reliable ways to verify identities, especially as the need to move away from passwords grew. My journey in identity management spans over 15–20 years, partnering with companies like Sun Microsystems and Microsoft, where I witnessed the evolution of standards and the challenges in creating a cohesive identity management solution. Inspired by these challenges, I helped develop the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) during the Obama administration, which laid the foundation for the identity ecosystem we built at ID Dataweb.

2. What specific obstacles have you faced in developing ID Dataweb, and how have you navigated these challenges?

Ans. Scaling ID Dataweb has presented challenges, particularly in capital, talent acquisition, and navigating market dynamics. Early on, we faced the absence of standards for data quality and interoperability, which we addressed by leading efforts to create industry standards. Another significant challenge was the increasing sophistication of fraud, requiring us to continuously innovate. Instead of relying on aggressive venture capital growth, we focused on sustainable growth and maintaining our company culture. Building a strong, aligned team and ensuring our solutions were both innovative and market-relevant were critical to overcoming these obstacles.

3. With the rise of new technologies, how has the company adapted to incorporate innovations like AI or machine learning? What key features have you introduced recently?

Ans. At ID Dataweb, we have adapted to detect and mitigate risks associated with AI-driven fraud. As AI technologies advance, so do the methods bad actors use to exploit them, such as deepfakes and synthetic identities. Our focus has been on developing robust verification processes that identify signs of AI manipulation, ensuring that identities are legitimate and data remains secure. By staying ahead of AI-based threats, we protect our clients while maintaining a seamless and secure user experience. Recent key features include enhanced fraud detection capabilities and streamlined interoperability between systems.

4. What emerging trends in data management do you foresee shaping the industry in the next few years? How is ID Dataweb preparing to adapt and stay ahead of these trends?

Ans. Emerging trends include the increasing reliance on biometrics, decentralized identity solutions, and the rise of AI-driven fraud detection. The industry is also moving toward federated ecosystems where trust and interoperability between organizations are paramount. ID Dataweb is preparing by continuing to develop its identity ecosystem, fostering trust through enhanced privacy and security measures, and innovating solutions that are user-centric and scalable. By staying at the forefront of these trends and maintaining a learning and adaptive culture, we ensure our solutions remain relevant and ahead of the curve.

5. How has the vision for ID Dataweb evolved since its inception, and where do you see the company in the next 3–5 years?

Ans. The vision for ID Dataweb has remained consistent since its inception: to create a secure, interoperable, and privacy-enhancing identity ecosystem. Initially, the focus was on establishing a broad, transformative ecosystem that could address global identity challenges. Over time, we refined this vision to prioritize solving specific enterprise problems, enabling us to generate revenue while building toward the larger goal.

In the next 3-5 years, we aim to expand the identity ecosystem into what we call “communities of interest”—federated networks of organizations that seamlessly trust and interact with each other. This will involve driving standards for interoperability, enhancing user experience, and maintaining strong security and privacy measures. Our ultimate goal is to become a key enabler of trusted identity ecosystems globally, bridging gaps between enterprises, consumers, and regulatory frameworks, while ensuring our solutions scale to meet evolving technological and market demands.

Additionally, in our conversation:

David Coxe emphasized that trust is foundational to both company culture and innovation. He highlighted that trust takes a long time to build but can be lost in an instant, making it critical for management and employees to work harmoniously to maintain and grow trust. In a trusting environment:

  1. Open Communication Thrives: Employees feel safe sharing ideas and expressing concerns without fear of retaliation. This openness drives innovation and collaboration.
  2. Mistakes Are Acceptable: Trust allows employees to take risks and learn from mistakes, which fosters creativity and growth.
  3. Autonomy Is Valued: Employees are empowered to take ownership of their work, contributing to a shared vision.
  4. Low Turnover Reflects Trust: The company’s low turnover rate indicates a strong bond of trust and mutual respect among team members.
  5. A Learning Culture Supports Trust: Trust and continuous learning go hand in hand, creating an environment where people feel motivated and supported to grow both personally and professionally.
