Google on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, announced a new initiative for college students, offering eligible students free Google AI plans for one year at no cost. With this, Google is also bringing new study tools that are designed to help students make the most of their school year. It allows them to organize coursework, understand complex subjects, conduct research, and prepare for exams with AI-powered tools.
Free AI Plans to Eligible College Students
One of the key updates is Google’s new student offers on its Google AI plans, which allows students returning to campus to unleash the full potential of Gemini. This available plan differs according to the location.
- Eligible college students in the US get one year of the Google AI Pro plan for free, which is valued at $19.99/mo. It comes with a 4x higher usage limit in Gemini, access to Gemini Spark and Gemini in Google apps such as Google Docs and Gmail, 5TB storage, and more.
- Eligible college students outside the US get one year of Google AI Plus at no cost. It comes with access to Gemini Omni, 2x higher usage limits in Gemini, 400GB of storage, and more.
- For students interested in ad-free music and video streaming, Google is offering Google AI Pro and a YouTube Premium subscription for up to 70% off. Students can claim offers here.
New Student Hub Brings Gemini Study Tools Together
Alongside the subscription offer, Google has introduced a dedicated student hub to help students get started with Gemini’s tools, offers, and features. The hub helps students stay organized, start a study notebook, create flashcards, take a practice quiz, and more. As Gemini introduces more learning tools, they will be available through the Student Hub.
Study Notebooks that Make Learning Easier
Google is also making studying easier with the launch of new Study notebooks that can use uploaded lecture notes and class materials to create study plans, identify knowledge gaps through diagnostic quizzes, craft custom, bite-sized lessons, and quizzes. This also comes with a real-time progress dashboard to track student’s milestones. Google is also planning to add graphs and images to these lessons.
Gemini Expands Visual Learning and Deep Research Features
For students who prefer learning with visuals, Google is expanding interactive learning through Gemini. It can now generate functional 3D simulations, tables, grids, and other visualizations tailored to their questions. For example, Gemini can create an interactive 3D DNA structure that students can rotate and zoom in on, making complex concepts visual and engaging.
Research is another key focus of the update. As Gemini Live provides a natural, conversational way to study, this update now integrates research into Gemini Live. This allows students to launch comprehensive, multi-step research reports and chat with Gemini about them. Gemini can continue working in the background while users leave the chat, then notify them when the report is ready. Students can subsequently discuss the findings, ask follow-up questions, or refine the research using voice.
All the new features, including Study notebooks, the Student Hub, interactive visualizations, and Deep Research in Gemini Live, are rolling out to all Gemini app users.
As stated by the tech giant, “Whether your goal this semester is to stay effortlessly organized, explore a new major, or ace your classes, Gemini’s here to help.“
What Students Should Know Before Signing Up?
Regarding the subscription plan, students should carefully review the terms before signing up. The offer is valid from 19 August through December 31, 2026. Students who want to discontinue the service can cancel before the end of the offer period to avoid being charged.
By introducing new initiatives for university students, including Google AI plans and new AI study tools, Google aims to make AI-powered learning easy and interactive.
