Users can now ask Maps complex, real-world questions in plain language and get tailored answers that use local listings, reviews, and their saved places. Google is rolling out a major overhaul of its Maps app that blends Gemini’s capabilities with richer driving visuals.
As per Google’s announcement made on 12 March 2026, “Ask Maps answers your real-world questions with a conversation, and Immersive Navigation makes your route more intuitive.”
The major features are Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation. Ask Maps is a chat-style assistant for location questions. Conversely, Immersive Navigation is a redesigned driving view with clearer, 3D guidance. These changes start rolling out now on mobile and expand over time.
Google’s step to redefine Maps aims to turn map exploration into a back-and-forth, not a list of search results. At the same time, navigation gets a visual refresh to make turns, lanes, and the final approach easier to follow while you drive.
Major Features to Look After:
Ask Maps:
Ask Maps is a conversational layer inside the Maps app. Instead of typing separate searches, you can ask things like where to charge a phone without long waits or how to plan a multi-stop scenic drive. The system pulls map data and contextual signals to produce practical suggestions and step-by-step plans.
Immersive Navigation:
Immersive Navigation layers rebuilt visuals over live routing. Expect 3D-style maps that highlight lane changes and intersections. The system surfaces Street View imagery, so you can preview tricky turns. It also adds clearer turn arrows and context for the last few hundred meters, so you do not miss a destination.
New Possibilities in Maps:
- See more of your route to prepare for your next move:Maps now offers a broader view of your route. With smart zooms and transparent buildings, the new features provide a full preview, helping you look ahead and prepare for complicated turns and lane changes.
- Understand tradeoffs for alternate routes:Maps integrates more than five million traffic updates across the world to offer clear comparisons of time, tolls, and traffic. It is now set to find the best route and send you alerts for real-time disruptions, such as construction and crashes.
- Master the final stretch of your drive with helpful guidance: Maps will now offer a preview of your destination and its surroundings through Street View. It aims to simplify the building’s entrance, nearby parking, and the street side.
How Does Gemini in Maps Work?
Gemini language models function in the background and process your natural language queries and combine that understanding with Maps’ live data. The model ranks options, explains tradeoffs such as tolls versus time, and can show Street View previews or lane guidance when needed.
While introducing new features in Maps, Google assures safeguards to prevent hallucinations. The firm also ensures that Ask Maps uses Maps and search data rather than pulling from unrelated inbox content.
Availability of Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation:
Ask Maps is rolling out in the US and India across Android and iOS devices. It will shortly be introduced on the desktop as well. On the other hand, Immersive Navigation is now available in the US. Its availability will expand across suitable iOS and Android devices, Android Auto, and CarPlay.
