Key Highlights:

  • OpenAI plans to buy Chrome if available.
  • Antitrust trial ruled against Google for its search and online advertising monopoly.
  • The trial may force Google to sell Chrome.
  • Google entertains exclusive agreements to strengthen its monopoly.
  • Selling Chrome is not Google’s plan for now.

OpenAI executive testifies that the firm would probably buy Chrome if the US antitrust trial forces Google to sell the in-demand web browser. The revelation of such intentions has been made in Google’s antitrust trial this week by Nick Turley, the Head of Product, ChatGPT. The ruling is a probable remedy by the US DOJ to restore competition in the search industry.

The antitrust trial of US vs. Google started in January 2023 following the disclosure of Google’s monopoly in search and online advertising technologies. As a solution to re-establish competition, the DOJ is set to implement far-reaching measures on Google. The probability of the prosecutors asking Google to sell Chrome is a part of this solution.

According to the primary statements in the trial this Monday, Google’s monopolistic approach can significantly benefit its AI development alongside its AI tools that ultimately lead the users to the Google search engine.

Furthermore, in August 2024, the trial found that Google used exclusive deals with several device manufacturing firms to strengthen its monopoly. Reportedly, the big tech company signed agreements with Android device manufacturers, like Samsung Electronics and Motorola, to set Chrome browser and Gemini AI as default tools on their devices.

Nevertheless, Google has not shown any sign of selling Chrome as of now. Additionally, the tech giant hints at an appeal to overturn the ruling decision about the search and advertisement monopoly.

Why OpenAI Might Buy Chrome?

As per Nick Turley’s previous testimony, OpenAI approached Google to use their search mechanism for ChatGPT following encountering difficulties with their existing search provider. However, Google declined OpenAI’s proposal. The first attempt OpenAI made was in July, which Google dismissed in August, stating concerns about including multiple competitors.

If available for acquisition, OpenAI will buy Chrome with the intention of enhancing the performance of ChatGPT, according to Turley. ChatGPT intends to offer timely and factual results to users, which it achieves by relying on the search. However, it may take significant time for ChatGPT to use its own search mechanism while solving 80% of the user queries.

Therefore, the acquisition of Google Chrome will be remarkably beneficial for OpenAI and ChatGPT while improving search experiences.
