Google recently has been marked in a landmark case by a US District Court judge (DoJ) that the company is holding an illegal monopoly of using its market power in internet search. This is a forceful sign for Google to break down and dissolve its business. With this, the sale of its popular web browser, Google Chrome, even though it’s not the scenario.
Another reveal is, OpenAI is ready to acquire Google Chrome if the tech giant pushes the tech giant to break off it. Following OpenAI’s interest, Perplexity’s owner, Aravind Srinivas, has mentioned purchasing Chrome should Google decide to sell it.
Adding, Dmitry Shevelenko, the chief business officer (CBO) of Perplexity, suggested purchasing Google Chrome, when questioned during the ongoing Google v. US DoJ lawsuit.
Nick Turley, ChatGPT’s chief of product, made a statement on Tuesday in a courtroom in Washington. He said that OpenAI had reached out to Google in 2023 to access its search API for ChatGPT. Turley also revealed that ChatGPT still relies on Bing for search and is years away from building its full-fledged search engine.
OpenAI said that integrating Google’s search API would enhance the performance of ChatGPT.
According to the DoJ, Google would have an unfair advantage in the AI competition due to its tight control over search and online infrastructure. Google maintains, however, that the market for AI is already competitive, with Microsoft and Meta among its notable rivals.
Peers in the industry, such as OpenAI and Perplexity, are keeping a close eye on Chrome as its future is at risk!
