Anthropic has merged Claude Chat and Claude Cowork into a single Claude experience. The company announced the change on September 16, 2026. The update removes the need to choose between regular conversations and Cowork for complex tasks. Claude can now determine which capabilities a request requires within the same conversation.
The unified experience of Claude Chat and Cowork is initially rolling out to Pro and Max subscribers. It will reach Team and Free users later. Enterprise administrators will receive advance notice before changes affect their organizations.
Highlighting the update, Anthropic states, “Starting today, Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Bring a quick question, or hand over a report due at noon, and Claude takes it from there, even after you’ve closed your laptop.”
Anthropic’s Mike Krieger writes on LinkedIn, “The best intelligence should also be easy to use. Today, Claude Cowork and Chat start becoming one Claude.”
Krieger further states that the unification addresses the confusion of Claude users about which product to use for which task. Users can now use Claude for any task and can get their work done within a single interface.
Anthropic Brings Cowork Capabilities in Claude Chat
Anthropic launched Claude Cowork in January 2026 for complex, multi-step knowledge work. It allowed Claude to handle tasks beyond individual prompt-and-response interactions.
However, under the new setup, those capabilities are available directly from Claude conversations. Users can start with a simple question and expand it into a larger task. Claude can now continue working after users close their laptops. It can also retain the necessary context, skills, connectors, and project information.
According to Anthropic, users previously found it frustrating to decide where their work belonged. Work started in one environment also did not automatically carry into another. The company is settling that confusion by unifying Claude Chat and Cowork while shifting that decision from users to Claude.
Docs, Slides, and Design are Also Included in the Unified Experience
Anthropic also introduced Claude Docs, Claude Slides, and Claude Design as beta features. Users can create documents or presentations and edit directly through Claude conversations. Claude can help users draft documents and develop presentation slides. Users can then edit the generated work within Claude.
Presentations can be downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF files while documents can be exported to formats including Microsoft Word and Google Docs. Claude Design is also moving into regular conversations. The feature previously operated as a separate experience for visual work.
Anthropic’s Endeavor to Turn Claude into a Work Platform
The merger of Claude Chat and Cowork indicates a major shift of Claude beyond conventional chatbot interactions. It also suggests that Anthropic is combining conversational AI, agentic task execution, document creation, presentations, and visual design. These capabilities can now operate from the same interface.
The update enables users to continue working from their existing Cowork projects, chats, artifacts, connectors, and skills. For this purpose, no separate migration process is required for the initial rollout. The unified Claude experience will roll out across the web, desktop, and mobile. Pro and Max users are set to receive it over the coming weeks, followed by Free and Team plans.
