Canva Releases Canva Craft, Its First and Advanced AI Image Generation Model

NewsTechTrendsCanva Releases Canva Craft, Its First and Advanced AI Image Generation Model

Canva introduces Canva Craft, an AI-powered image generation model developed by Canva Research, the company’s in-house AI research lab. The model uses a two-stage architecture where first, it plans the overall image composition, then generates the final result. This approach aims to improve text accuracy, object placement, and control over visual layouts.

Unlike traditional image generators that create an image directly from a prompt, Canva Craft first plans how the image should look. It then passes that plan to a separate rendering model that generates the final image. Canva says Craft generates visuals at up to 2K resolution and supports over 30 aspect ratios.

How Does Canva Craft Work?

The first stage simplifies the user’s prompt and creates an image outline. It identifies the elements to include, their positions, relative sizes, and visual hierarchy.

The second stage converts this plan into a final image. This process is designed to help the model manage complex layouts, including posters, advertisements, and social media graphics. It also allows users to make precise changes without affecting other parts of the layout.

Many models struggle to place text accurately or maintain a consistent layout when a prompt includes multiple requirements. This design deals with a common challenge in AI image generation. Canva says Craft is built to handle these tasks more precisely.

Training Focuses on Design

Craft’s training data includes millions of human-created templates from Canva’s content library, covering presentations, posters, menus, infographics, and social media posts.

This approach gives the model examples of how typography, spacing, alignment, and images work together in finished designs. Canva also uses supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning to improve instruction following and visual quality.

Canva Craft also works with Canva’s Magic Layers feature, which converts generated images into editable design elements. This gives users more flexibility to adjust individual parts of a design.

Availability and Competition

Canva Craft is available to users through Dream Lab tab and to developers through Canva’s public API. The company is developing two faster versions, Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast. Craft’s performance will depend on how reliably it handles detailed prompts, readable text, and complex compositions. Its focus on design tasks may benefit businesses and creators who want to integrate AI-generated visuals into their existing creative workflows.
