The leading tech giant, Samsung, has introduced a new Privacy Display technology to prevent “shoulder surfing” by decreasing screen visibility from viewing angles. Screen privacy has always been a concern for many, as it unexpectedly lets users see what’s up on your mobile. To address this, a new privacy feature has been introduced.
The technology changes the way mobile phone screen privacy is handled and strengthens its move towards privacy at pixel level. The feature was launched on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, at the Galaxy S26 live event, debuting on the flagship Galaxy S26 Ultra.
What is the Privacy Display Feature?
Unlike traditional privacy films, which often make the display dimmer and sharing content inconvenient, Samsung’s Privacy Display solution is built directly into the display architecture. This technology, called Black Matrix, uses a combination of narrow and wide pixels to control how light is emitted.
The Samsung Privacy Display feature on Galaxy S26 Ultra is a combination of both software and hardware. In normal mode, both the pixel types work together to offer a range of viewing angles. When enabling Privacy Mode, the display focuses on narrow pixels that project light right toward the user, reducing visibility from the sides while keeping the screen clear for head-on viewing.
Remarkable Features to Note
One of the key features of Privacy Display is customization, which allows users to enable privacy mode for apps or notifications while leaving others unaffected.
Notifications can be blacked out when viewed from certain angles. For a higher security level, “Maximum Privacy Protection” further enhances privacy by dimming bright areas and reducing dark tones, even though it may affect normal viewing angles.
This feature was presented live on stage during the event and worked well, even for small elements such as notifications.
The Availability
Regarding availability, the feature is set to be used on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, making it the first and only smartphone with hardware-level screen privacy. With this, Samsung is taking a big move in the industry, putting privacy on mobile screens first. The company plans to expand its availability based on user feedback.
