Microsoft has released emergency out-of-band (OOB) updates to address the issues observed after its January 2026 Patch Tuesday security release. The recent problems report that some PCs could not be properly shut down, causing system shutdown failures, Remote Desktop login issues, and Outlook Classic crashes, forcing Microsoft to act outside its normal update cycle.
The issue impacts Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows servers. Alongside, the most significant and extensive problem impacted Remote Desktop connections on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. After installing the January 2026 security updates, many users reported authentication failures during sign-in, particularly when connecting through the Windows App.
As confirmed by Microsoft, “After installing the January 2026 security update, credential prompt failure can occur in some remote connections.” The issue has been fixed with emergency patches released on January 27 via the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Shutdown and Secure Launch Issues Addressed
Another bug affected Windows 11 version 23H2, mainly in enterprise environments. It prevents some PCs with Secure Launch enabled from shutting down or entering hibernation.
Instead, the PCs affected restarted when users chose the power-off options. While this issue affected a smaller user base, as Windows 11 23H2 is not supported for consumers, it was addressed in emergency updates.
The Other Bugs, and What Users Should Know
Even though fixes have been released for two bugs, Microsoft has identified a third major bug affecting Outlook Classic users relying on POP email accounts. The issue causes Outlook to freeze or run in the background, preventing regular functionality and system reboots.
In addition, Windows reports three unresolved issues: black screens during startup, desktop wallpaper resets, and the File Explorer’s desktop.ini feature not working. Users facing these issues should uninstall the update as a temporary workaround.
The latest emergency patch highlights the constant challenges with Windows updates and strengthens the importance of patch deployment.
